Think comfort food and grilled cheese often comes to mind. The Grilled Cheese Social Eatery in Barrie takes this familiar sandwich to a new level with 16 mouth-watering versions, and now they are adding compostable food service ware, and environmental awareness to the menu.
Feel at home in the cozy relaxed atmosphere of this restaurant where support for local business thrives. Store furnishings and décor have found a second life at Grilled Cheese Eatery after outliving their former use at another business. Still strong and valuable, these repurposed items give restaurant visitors a sense of home. From initiating charitable efforts to promoting local business and shopping regularly at the Barrie farmer’s market, the owner Randy likes to support the community. Fair trade coffee is available, and in the summer, salads may be garnished with home-grown herbs.
In an effort to reduce the environmental impact of the restaurant, lighting has been upgraded to improve efficiency. Now that the colder months are here, weather-stripping and kitchen window film has been installed to conserve energy. A thermos is used to keep coffee hot instead of energy-consuming burners and food waste is collected in a green box. Since the hot water tank is shared and well-maintained by the landlord, Randy focuses on other energy-saving strategies under his control. Appliances are energy-efficient, and bike racks are available nearby. During summer months, the Grilled Cheese Social Eatery is cooled by the breeze from the lake due to the North-South positioning of the restaurant. Similarly, lights are turned off on days when natural lighting is adequate.
Food waste produced at the Grilled Cheese Social Eatery is low because items are prepared fresh to meet incoming orders. Since takeout containers are the largest source of waste for the restaurant, Randy has now made the switch to consistently use compostable take out soup, sandwich, and coffee containers, wooden take out forks and spoons. Grilled Cheese Social Eatery does not sell plastic bottled water, and 90% of all take out beverage are delivered in recyclable glass bottles. They are also on track to switch to environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies.
